As most of you know, the Rochester School District is in debt from overspending in recent years. On February 18th, 2026 the Rochester School Board decided to get rid of block scheduling. That was one of the main proposals in the plan and many students and teachers do not want to switch the schedule and daily way of learning. Me personally, I have not heard of anyone that wants to switch to every day classes instead of A and B day. As well as the schedule change, many teachers are getting cut due to the school’s funding, that mostly comes from the school paying a lot of teachers. It is very devastating to teachers and students to know that the district is changing and making moves. There have also been concerns about all of the changes, including a new superintendent, which means the school will be under new management. The school has had many superintendents in the past years and Rochester is looking to keep a superintendent for an extended period of time.
With block scheduling no longer being a thing at Rochester High School, students will have to attend all of their classes each day instead of attending only four and then switching to another four the next day. This will be a big change, especially for the junior class and the sophomore class. The freshman class may not be as affected due to junior high having the same type of scheduling that Rochester High School will have in the future. It is never good for a community to know that teachers will be cut and that the district will be cutting some of the valuable things within the school community. For example, the Rochester 2-3 building is being closed because it costs too much to run another building when they could fit the grades in the other buildings.. There have been many people that have reached out to the district office and the school board about wanting to prevent these changes coming for next year and the upcoming years after that. As well as a new superintendent, there will be a new high school principal, because the current principal is retiring after this year.
It may be challenging for students to cooperate with these new accommodations, but they will eventually get used to them knowing that the new changes will be there for a while. Many experienced teachers that have been at Rochester High School will also be affected because they have mostly taught their careers under the A and B day schedule. There are plenty of changes for which students will be needing to prepare for, in order to have a successful school year, as well as teachers.
