Is AI Overall Good for Humanity?
AI, or otherwise known as Artificial Intelligence, is something created by humans, and it learns from humans as well. Does that mean it’s good?
I interviewed two freshmen, Zachary Dart and Mason Dye, and they will give their own opinions on whether AI is good or bad for the sake of humanity.
“Nah, I think it is bad, that’s because it replaces humans in a wide variety of fields of employment,” said Zachary.
“As well as make our species as a whole dumber, this is because people rely solely on AI to do things such as research or things like their homework.” Said Zacahry, expressing that he believes AI will make humans more reliant on it instead of the knowledge they have.
“Let’s not forget about the resources as well, it uses gallons upon gallons of water, which raises electricity costs on the people that live near those AI data centers because the company is obviously not paying for it all,” Zachary said.
AI uses a lot of resources, takes jobs from humans, and can be used in wrong ways, but can It be used for good?
“Yes, AI can be used as a good thing if it’s handled in the right way. It needs to be more focused on more of an extension of what we can do with it, rather than doing all the work for it. For example, my father uses it, he uses it as a tool for doing his business. It helps with research and give topics that he needs to cover and then researches them himself, so he doesn’t get wrong information and gets correct facts.” Zachary said. These ways of using AI can be useful, but they still do use those resources that Zachary stated earlier.
Next is Mason Dye, who has an interesting outlook on the overall goodness of AI.
“I think its good and bad, because first of all, it can be useful for people who need to get assignments done faster, check their work, and to help make things,” Mason said for the good traits AI can have.
“Then my reasoning for no is because it takes up a ton of water, and water is a limited resource. If AI continues to change and develop, then it could end up needing even more water. At the same time, that advancement and development could also change AI into requiring less water in order to be used. However, in the long run, this technology still will require water,” Said Mason.
“I do not fear that AI can be to smart, though, because it’s a program made by humans. It can not really override the programming. Like a study done with Grok AI, and it was about morals, and basically it just stated that it is unable to commit harm to humans,” Mason said. Unable to fear something like AI.
AI is a tool made by humans, and it requires many resources and time. It also takes jobs from humans and causes higher electricity bills. However, it is a tool that can help humans with a variety of tasks; it just depends on how you use the tool to make it good or bad.
