Rochester High School should have a longer winter break for many reasons. 16 days off from school is not enough time to decompress and get an actual break. We spend the week before studying and taking so many finals, our brains are fried because of how much of studying and the amount of application of our brains that we have to use.
I asked Jenna Bales, Liliana Marchioro, and Brooklyn Thompson how they felt bout this topic. Jenna said, “I think we should have a longer break because I go to my grandparents’ house every Christmas, and I love spending time with my family, but I always feel that it is so rushed.” I completely agree with her, because I go to my grandparents every year too, and I wish I got more time with them, because my family is so much more important to me than school. School is important, but family will always be number one.
Liliana Marchioro stated, “Winter break should be longer because it is like the first real break we get, and it’s always so busy, schools should give us more leisure time to relax.” I think that if schools think about their students in this way, then many more students would enjoy school and not feel like they are forced. This would also help kids feel less stressed because we all need time off, especially teachers. It is so hard to come up with new lesson plans for every class, and then teach, and just hope that it all goes to plan.
Lastly, Brooklyn Thompson told me, “I think winter break should be longer because our brains need a longer time to mentally prepare ourselves to start a new semester.” Brooklyn makes a really good point. Not only do we need a break, but we also need time to prepare ourselves for the third semester. The third semester is known as the hardest semester in every grade level. Knowing this, the schools should give their students a little more time to prepare, so that their brains have time to settle down, and they will be so much more productive.
Seeing all of these reasons, I do not understand why we don’t have a longer break, and I do not see what good reasons they could actually come up with to justify students being stuck at school with no real long breaks at all, when even some classes give us stuff to do over those so called “breaks.”
