Have you ever wondered why the Senate and the House of Representatives only meet on certain days? I was curious, so I decided to do some research. According to many resources, including House.gov, California State Senate, etc. The Senate and House of Representatives meet only Monday through Friday and only on weekends as needed. They do not meet on weekends so that their members can travel back to their home states/districts to meet with constituents, attend local events, and spend time with family. Monday through Friday is technically the schedule, but more often than not, it is Tuesday through Thursday. They make it an important step to make sure that their members are able to have a life and a family, while also taking the responsibility of having a job so high up. I think it is very important that they do this, so that their members can serve longer because they do not get burnt out. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they mostly talk about convening, procedural matters, and beginning debate on legislation. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, they normally talk about heavy days for committee hearings, floor votes, and finalizing weekly legislative goals. And, lastly, on Fridays, the talk is all about the final votes or, frequently, no legislative business as members return to their districts. This is specifically planned out so that they can get things done in an efficient manner. This was probably a long conversation that was had to figure out the best way to do things. I like the system that they have going now, because based on how long people stay as members, it is working great! Having the weekends off seems like a great way to make sure that people stay happy and healthy! I think that them only working 5-day workweeks is an excellent idea that helps them so much, because they get to work efficiently, but also get rest time!
