Many high school students play sports while juggling their academics. Many people do not participate in sports because they think it takes up too much time and will hurt their grades. Others think that sports are a great way to get involved and will eventually help students do better in school. Many teens think that being a student-athlete teaches them skills that can help in the future that school can’t.
A huge advantage of playing sports is time management. Athletes often have practice or games right after school. Because of this, they have to plan and know their schedule. Freshman Tinley Bialas says, ”I have never been good at keeping a good schedule, but ever since high school basketball, I feel like I have improved.” Learning to use time wisely helps students stay organized rather than procrastinating.
Sports can also teach discipline and responsibility. All athletes have to show up on time, pay attention to coaches, and put in their best effort during drills and games. These same skills can be shown in class. Those who are used to working hard at practice usually apply those same skills while completing assignments or any tasks in the classroom. Being a part of a team also helps with group projects and accountability.
Another positive effect of sports is focus. Exercise is also great for reducing stress and keeping teens healthy. After being active, many students are ready to concentrate on schoolwork. Freshman Sophia Mehring says,” Going to dance practice gives me something to look forward to. It helps me clear my head after a long day of school.” Feeling less stress and pressure lifts a huge weight off students’ shoulders.
However, sports can also become overwhelming. If students do not choose their time wisely, they can burn themselves out. “While being a student athlete, you have to leave time to work on homework or study for upcoming tests.” Freshman Tinley Bialas says. If students do not stay organized, their grades tend to drop, which is why teens need to put academics before sports.
Overall, taking part in sports can have a positive or negative effect. The positives are maintaining athletic skills, managing time, and staying focused. Sports teach responsibility, which plays a big part in schoolwork accountability. Although you could get burned out, being part of a team helps you grow both on the court, field, stage, and in the classroom.
