Why are People Decorating for Christmas Early?
By: Joey Shea
With the Christmas season coming up, it’s become a trend to start decorating before Thanksgiving. People tend to get into the Christmas spirit by decorating their house during the month of November, whereas in previous years, decorating started in December. Many people find joy in spreading holiday cheer early, while others believe it should wait until after Thanksgiving to fully appreciate each holiday’s significance.
The holiday season of Christmas is often associated with feelings of joy and happiness. Christmas decorations are traditionally colorful and full of cheer. Decorating your house makes the overall ambiance happy. Some people are eager to decorate because it brightens up the gloomy winter air, which is why some choose to decorate in November.
On the other hand, some people still prefer to decorate at the beginning of December. While Christmas decorations can be exciting, at the same time, they can be overwhelming. Having your decor up for 2 months can get overpowering, which may be why some people decide to wait. Another reason is tradition. It’s a common feeling to want to stick to a tradition.
Social media has a big impact on decorating, too. When users post themselves decorating early, it influences an audience. The rise in Christmas decorating on social media causes more people to decorate their houses in early November.
As well as social media, big companies contribute to early decorating. Stores like Walmart and Target put out their Christmas decor immediately after Halloween, with some sources claiming Walmart put out Christmas decor in early September. When you look, there are more Christmas-themed items than Thanksgiving/ fall. Thanksgiving is often overlooked in stores, which causes people to decorate for Christmas before the Thanksgiving season is over.
To sum this up, early appearances of Christmas decorations are a reflection of many factors. Some of the main factors being the desire for joy, the influence of social media, and commercial interests. While some embrace the early start to the Christmas holiday, others prefer to maintain tradition and allow Thanksgiving a time to shine. Ultimately, the timing of Christmas decorating is a personal choice, influenced by individual preferences.
