Should there be an Esports Team?
With there being 170 Colleges now that have an Esports program, should Rochester entertain the idea of starting their own Esports Club/Team for students passionate about the sport?
Wes Myers, the Cofounder and Executive of the chess club, said, “There not really any harm in having more clubs or teams for the school so if you want an esports club, I say, go for it, you know?” “It could be a good opportunity for some folks at the school” But some people like Wes don’t believe that Esports is an actual sport but just an activity. “You know chess and Esports could be put under the same category of activities, but they aren’t sports” While other students thought different “It’s a different kind of sport, but yeah, I would probably consider it a sport.” Said Cash Coker a Rochester freshman
But if there was going to be an Esports club, the students would need a coach. Rochester students suggested Ms.Cooper would make a great leader for anybody wanting to be on an esports team. Others said Mr. Klemm would also make a great choice because of his witty additude.
Some problems for this potential Esport team would include what games they would play. especially with the new laws coming into schools, and phones being banned. Would this affect consoles or hardware needed for this Esports team?
But would the school even want to pay for this new club by buying consoles or have the students apart of this team buy their own, or maybe rent their own for the season? But again this depends on the games they choose to play for the team, for example, if they were to play “Super Smash Bro’s” the team members would need a Nintendo console because some games are exclusive to certain consoles. Some students had solutions to the problem “At first, probably just like, bring it from home, and then like once it gets bigger, probably should start providing stuff.” Said Cash Coker.
Esports being a new and upcoming activity, there is not many Schools that have their own Esports team for Rochester to play against. But with the rise in popularity, it’s more than likely this will spread to other schools sooner than later. Especially if Rochester leads the way by starting their own team other schools might follow.
If Esports were to be an after school activity, Rochester Highschool students could benefit from, a new and exciting activity for students not in a sport or club yet that are also passionate about games, could join and have some way to represent the Rochester community in their own way and show off their talents or skills.
