Is Taylor Swift’s New Album Inferior to Her Previous Albums?

Is ‘The Life of the Showgirl,’ really that bad?” Taylor Swift recently dropped a new album on October 3rd, entitled “The Life of a Showgirl”. Fans highly anticipated this album, hyping it up even before its release. As someone who listens to Taylor Swift, I was thrilled to listen to her new work.

11:00 P.M. Central Standard Time (CST) hits, and the album drops. I turn it on and listen. Personally, my first impression wasn’t negative. I adored how upbeat and peppy the songs were. However, what stuck out to me about the songs was that they sounded identical to themselves. To the point that I found myself having a difficult time telling the songs apart from one another. “I thought a lot of the songs were, like, kind of similar in nature.” English teacher, Mrs. Michaud, explains.

I opened TikTok and was blown away by the backlash against the album. Listeners were claiming it sounded “AI-generated” and her lyrics were a “hard listen”.

This brings us to the question: Is Taylor Swift’s new album inferior to her previous albums?

Taylor Swift is known for writing songs reliant on her past relationships. Her songs primarily focus on breakups and dealing with sad emotions. Which is why most of the critical comments she got on her new album were directed at the fact that they weren’t about breakups.

“I think everyone anticipated the album to be a certain role, and when it wasn’t, [the album] wasn’t meeting people’s expectations.”  English teacher, Miss Cooper, says.

This seems to be the case with most opinions. There was a high bar for Taylor Swift to meet, and when she didn’t meet it, people resorted to trashing her album.

Most listeners’ first impression of the album was negative.“I thought it wasn’t as good as her other albums,” Student Lily Roan explains,  “As I listened to it more, I liked it more.” Proving that the first impression was bad because it under-exceeded what everyone predicted it would be.

Taylor Swift is known for holding records for her songs. This set the expectation relatively high, especially since her audience was looking forward to another record-breaking album. “I think her last albums were better. I don’t know why this one was bad.” Carlee Fairchild says. I think that’s a blunt way to put it. ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ isn’t a bad album; however, it’s not her best work.

This answers the question. ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ isn’t a bad album! However, the quality doesn’t match her other work. So yes, her new album is inferior to her previous ones.
