SeaWorld has been controversial for the past decade; however, I think it is sickening
and shocking. For the last 10 years, there have been so many opinions on whether or not SeaWorld
should face consequences for their repulsive actions. SeaWorld has been abusing their animals for
entertainment long before it started to be talked about. While some may disagree, there is a lot of evidence to point otherwise. Even trainers have been harmed because of it. There are so many obvious signs from the animals: stress, head banging, and flopping over dorsal fins. Not only has Seaworld been keeping these animals in tiny enclosures making them sad and stressed, but also treating them horribly in many other ways. They drag animals from the ocean and drug them. This is so they can breed more animals and ship them off to other places away from their parents. Most of these children are bred to die, so it’s just leading to pain and more death. “SeaWorld’s Sexual Abuse of Animals Exposed” by PETA shares my opinion of SeaWorld. This article enunciated that these animals are used as breeding machines just to be kept in a small tank and die. I have struggled with this topic but since I’ve been made aware of it, it’s just gotten so much worse. These animals deserve better and should not be subjected to this for our entertainment.
The film Blackfish, made in 2013 directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, represents the true cruelty these animals go through. Many people have changed their opinions on SeaWorld after viewing this documentary. “After I visited SeaWorld, I decided to do research on why it was giving me such bad feelings,” said Wesleyan student Sam Cere. “I watched the documentary Blackfish, which speaks out about the mistreatment and abuse of animals in facilities such as Seaworld. The documentary completely swayed my opinions about SeaWorld.” Sam is very emotional when it comes to the mistreatment of animals. She agrees that SeaWorld should be reprimanded for this awful abuse. “I remember crying at SeaWorld due to the poor treatment and visible sadness of the animals,” explained Sam. “Animals should not be on display and live their lives in captivity for only the sake of viewing and educational purposes.” Sam agrees with my claim on this topic and we have both sworn off SeaWorld because of the awful mishandling of these animals.
