Rochester High School revealed its new tennis courts on September 24 after a two-year process; they are finally complete with brand-new fencing, surfaces, and lights. The ceremony included the RHS Girls Tennis Team, Athletic Director JR Boudouris, and as well as representatives from the Rochester School Board. The Girls’ tennis team cut the ribbon as a group and did it while cheering. Head coach Rolando Salazar was very pumped for the event. “You know, it’s been a long time coming for those courts to get there,” he started, “I’m very happy and so excited to return to our home courts and play home matches.” This sentiment of enthusiasm is shared by many. “These courts are amazing,” commented Assistant Coach Micheal Bliss. the girls have been so excited for them.” The ceremony also provided spectators and the team with free food and beverages. This only enticed a bigger audience to attend. In addition to being the opening ceremony, the evening also celebrated Senior Night. This only helped to commemorate the night more and make it special for everyone.
“It’s exciting that the courts are done, being at Southeast takes away from our school spirit. We had to have ‘home matches’ at Washington Park,” said junior Cora Haupt, “knowing that we can represent Rochester at our own courts is really fun.” Haupt will get to experience the new courts for the current season and for next season as well. “These courts will keep both the tennis teams busy,” said Bliss. “Hopefully the new courts will also attract more students to come try out for the team.” The courts have brought much excitement to the team as well as the community. “I’ve been waiting on these new courts forever”, the former RHS head tennis coach exclaimed, “I never thought I would see the day when they would finally be redone.” The ribbon-cutting ceremony has cut open a whole new world of possibilities for both the tennis team and Rochester community.
